Once a year, in print. The canon as it stood on a fixed date, the year's instrument data, commissioned pieces from people who operate, and a full account of what we corrected.
Not publishing yet
Print is the right medium for a reference work precisely because it cannot be revised. An annual edition freezes the canon on a date and forces a judgement about what was actually settled that year. The online canon keeps moving; the printed one is the record of what we believed when it went to press, errors included.
Before it ships
- It publishes when there is a year of maintained canon behind it, not on an announced date.
- The corrections section is not an appendix. A year of admitted errors is the most useful thing in an annual edition.
- Commissioned pieces carry their own bylines. This is where the masthead stops being one person.
- Print economics have to work without vendor pages, which is the constraint that decides the format and the price.
